Girl at War by Sara Nović is historical fiction and is the first novel written by Nović. Set in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia as the civil war is breaking out across Yugoslavia, we follow Ana first as a ten-year-old and then as a college student in New York. As we learn the pieces of what happened in Ana’s life, we see how war has shaped her idea of family, love and loss.
I really enjoyed this book and my only complaint is that it ended too abruptly! Just as I’m falling more in love with Ana’s character and her friendship she has rediscovered with her childhood friend, Luka, the story is over! I’ll just have to imagine the perfect ending to this book.
Perfect book for anyone who like historical fiction and coming of age stories!
